The Pass Mark for Learners: 22, 23 and 6 Out of 64

What you need in each section, and what to take to the DLTC

What the pass mark for learners is, section by section

The pass mark for learners is not one number. The learner’s licence test is 64 questions in three sections, and each section is passed or failed on its own: 22 of 28 on the rules of the road, 23 of 28 on road signs and markings, and 6 of 8 on the controls of the vehicle. Reaching 51 out of 64 overall is not a pass if any one of the three falls short.

If you fail one section

You must meet the minimum mark in all three sections to pass the learner’s licence test. Missing the mark in one section fails the whole test, however well the other two went. The road signs section is the strictest at 23 of 28, which is why 28 of the 64 questions — and most of the study time — belong there.

How the marks on this page are verified

The section pass marks above are taken from the Minimum requirements for registration and retention of grading for driving licence testing centres (Schedule), and the booking and document list from the South African Government service page, Apply for a learner’s licence. K53 Academia checks both before publishing and is an independent study resource, not endorsed by the Road Traffic Management Corporation.

Pass marks and document requirements can differ in detail between testing centres. Confirm edge cases with your local DLTC, and tell us if you find something out of date so it can be corrected.
